BJJ Brown Belt Karen Miller became a pioneering force for women’s Jiu-Jitsu in New York City last weekend.
FIFTEEN total women (white, blue, purple, and brown belts) arrived to train last Sunday. These women hailed from many different academies in New York (Vitor Shaolin’s, Marcelo Garcia’s, Ronin, a Renzo affiliate in the Bronx, and of course Clockwork and Mrkulic). One woman even represented an academy from Arkansas! The ladies trained for two solid hours then spent time discussing Jiu-Jitsu and their experiences being a woman in Jiu-Jitsu. What isn’t enjoyable about an experience many women in our sport still do not get to have frequently, hard training with a room full of people their size and strength!
Karen has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over seven years and is impressed with the growth she has seen in the female BJJ community in recent times. She is excited to be able to experience Jiu-Jitsu in a whole new way!
