Today we saw some of the old hats and some brand new hats at black belt looking to make a name for themselves in the new year.
A known rivalry in the sport of BJJ, with Michelle Nicolini now up in weight (she fought Pluma until 2010) and Kyra Gracie now down from her usual Leve Division, these two ladies are sure to fight many times over. The winner goes back and forth each time they meet and the viewers can always count on an exciting match! Catch their recent battles here…
From the article by Jen Flannery on The Fightworks Podcast.
We may one day look back and say that 2011 was the beginning of a new era in women’s Jiu-Jitsu. A record number of female competitors at the 2011 world championships in Long Beach (a 30% increase over the previous year) is only one of many reasons why.
In her post-fight Interview, Kyra Gracie noted that there are no longer single ladies that dominate everyone in her divisions, any one of a few ladies could win on any given day.
[caption id="attachment_806" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Hijab"][/caption]It’s easy for those of us ladies training BJJ in the “Western” or “Developed” (or whatever the current politically correct term is for our society) to get frustrated at a lack of support or training partners for females. And we are correct to be so in many cases, but those ladies coming out to compete at the Abu Dhabi Pro this weekend in hijab (head covering worn by Muslim women) under their gis, are the true barrier breakers. In a society where women are not often allowed/encouraged to participate in sport, especially a combative sport, these ladies were out on the mats representing themselves and their culture well, paving the way for more to follow in their footsteps.

The matches become more even and exciting as the years go by and the ladies become more and more technical at the highest levels of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
It definitely shows the growth in the sport worldwide when a company like Budovideos is streaming all the matches live on the internet. It is rumored that 60,000 people logged in on Saturday to watch. They only show one or two matches at a time, but the commentators try to let you know what’s happening on the other mats. My only complaint is their lack of knowledge of the female fighters. It’s appalling to me that they didn’t really know who Hannette Staack was. SHE’S A THREE TIME ADCC GOLD MEDALIST… They have obviously not done their homework when it comes to the ladies. But, I am excited to report on the divisions that I was able to witness.
